SPRING


Tamba-Sasayama's Sakura Week

Sasayama Castle is famous for being one of the best cherry blossom viewing spots in the Hyogo prefecture. 

 

During this once a year flower viewing-event, we recommend that you stay for the night as a bonfire will be lit, illuminating the 1000 Yoshino cherry trees in full-bloom scattered around the castle.    

SUMMER


Dekansho Festival

This festival is known for being one of the largest folk song festivals in western Japan. During the day several dance competitions are held together with a large selection of dance workshops for those who would like to join in on the festivities.

 

At night, local and visitors come together to dance around a wooden tower as fireworks light up the midsummer night sky.

AUTUMN


Sasabe Shrine Festival

One of the three major festivals of Tamba Sasayama and has been handed down for 400 years. The highlight of this event is called Yabusame where an archer on a running horse shoots three special “turnip-headed” arrows successively at three wooden targets.

 

During this festival, Ten floats and seven portable shrines with taiko drums are paraded throughout precinct shrines located in Yoimiya. 

WINTER


Fudoson Reizai

The event takes place in Kurikara Fudoson where a stone statue of Fudo Myo is enshrined in the base of the Fudo Waterfall. During this event, the townsfolk to gather and pray for a year of good health and family safety. 

 

Combined with the unique atmosphere, the townsfolk participate in a unique ritual called “Firewalking”. A structure made of cypress to be burned and the townsfolk walk on the charcoal remains as 17 people from the Tamba Ominekai chant their prayers.

Tourist Attractions

New Places To Explore

We have several historical buildings and cultural attractions that can be found throughout the city. You can find a glimpse of what our city has to offer by checking out some of our tourist attractions shown below.

Kozoji Temple

An ancient temple erected in the second year of Taika. Before Akechi Mitsuhide tried to burn the temple, there were seven doors and twenty-one monks. It was known to be the “evening bell of Kozoji” as one of the eight views of Oyama. 

Konda Yakushi Onsen

A Japanese hot spring that opened in 1999. It is known for its excellent water quality and soothing temperature. It houses two large public baths. The baths are made out of a stone found in Tamba Sasayama and are one of the town’s specialties.

Ojiyama Makekirai Inari

On the west side of Ojiyama Park lies a stone stairway lined up with numerous red Torii gates. The shrine has the name “Makekirai” (hate-to-lose) which originated from the passing down the shrine’s story for generations upon generations.

Sasayama Castle Ruins

This historic spot was burnt down on January 6, 1944, but due to the wishes and donations of the locals of Tamba Sasayama, it was rebuilt in March 2000. The castle contains an exhibition room. a theater room, and a panel display to explain the history and construction of the castle.

Udo-Kannon Guseiji

The temple was originally founded as “Tenchizan Gokurakuji ” by Hermit Hodo in Hakuchi Period. The temple prospered with a lot of Monks’ residences. However, in the Genpei War (1184), the general “Yoshitsune Minamoto” suspected the Heishi lying in ambush and set fire to the temple.

Taisho Romankan

A former town hall that was renovated into a new sightseeing base. The exterior has a Western design reminiscent of Taisho Modernism. The facility houses several restaurants and souvenir shops that sell food and products that are unique to Tamba Sasayama.

Fresh Produce

Edamame

Edamame are immature soybeans harvested before they ripen. They are often eaten as a snack or used as an ingredient in dishes. These soybeans are known to be rich in protein and vitamins.

Kuro Edamame

Our city's black soybeans are the highest grade of soybeans, boasting the best flavor in all of Japan. They are bigger in size and have a sweeter and richer taste than regular soybeans.

Tamba Kuri

Tamba kuri are chestnuts harvested in Tamba. These are claimed to be the best chestnuts in Japan. Groups of daimyo lords purchased chestnuts in Tanba whenever they travelled to Sasayama.

Tamba Sasayama Rice

Due to the geographical situation of a large temperature gap between day and night and rich water resources, Sasayama grows excellent quality rice. It is often considered the best rice in Western Japan.

Yama-no-Imo

Yama-no Imo (a kind of taro) is cultivated in the natural climate and rich soil of Tamba Sasayama. Due to the climate and soil, the harvested taro when eaten is chewy and flavorful.

Tamba Matsutake

Matsutake is the king of Japanese mushrooms. The matsutakes from our city are regarded as the King of Kings. Their shape, rich fragrance and texture are considered unique and of high quality.

Aromatic Beverages

Tamba Tea

Tamba Sasayama's tea leaves are grown using a traditional technique that has continued since the Heian period. Our city has the largest tea production in the entire Hyogo Prefecture. The flavor and aroma of the tea can be attributed to the low temperatures and foggy weather.

Tamba Sake

Tamba sake is a rice wine made by master sake brewers called toji. Through their mastery of a century-long tradition, the toji use the locally produced rice to create a sake with high quality and distinct taste. Some of the well-known sake brands in our city are Shuugetsu and Houmei.

Savory Meats

Wild Boar Meat

Tamba Sasayama's delicious wild boar meat became known throughout the country during the Meiji Period. The natural environment of the local boars in Sasayama is one of the factors that makes the meat so delicious. The environment creates healthy plants and mushrooms for the boars to eat.

Tamba Sasayama Beef

Our city's black soybeans are the highest grade of soybeans, boasting the best flavor in all of Japan. They are bigger in size and have a sweeter and richer taste than regular soybeans.

Tamba-Yaki Ceramics

Tanba-yaki ceramics are one of the six greatest ceramic kilns in Japan along with Seto, Tokoname, Shigaraki, Bizen, and Echizen. Its history is said to date back from the Heian period. Continuing the tradition for 800 years, Tanba-yaki is a favorite ceramic style for many people due to its simple and warm touch.

Tamba Momen Cotton

Sasayama has been a production area of high quality cotton. People spin and weave fabrics since the early 18th century. Today the cotton fabric, Tanba Momen, has been selected as the traditional craft of Hyogo Prefecture as well as a rare kind of traditional craft.
